Bone loss with osteoporosis occurs over many years and can be so serious that the normal stress on the bones from standing, sitting, or walking can result in immobility and fracture. After the first fracture, you are at risk for more broken bones which may cause you chronic pain and disability. Osteoporosis may present with no symptoms or pain. Losing height or a back hump develops with age. Detecting it with a bone density test (DEXA) is easy, and the treatment plan can be made to prevent fractures. There are no medications that can be taken to prevent or slow down the bone loss in osteoporosis.
